Bringing Awareness to Child Abuse in Treatment Facilities
Every year, thousands of children are sent against their will—often torn from their beds in the middle of the night by unfamiliar faces—to private facilities that claim to treat various mental health issues, addiction problems, and so-called behavioral concerns. These programs proudly advertise themselves under various names: “boot camps,” “behavioral modification schools,” “wilderness therapy,” “secured group homes,” and “conversion therapy.” They market their services to parents, therapists, state and judicial agencies, and insurance companies as legitimate treatment options.
However, these programs frequently fail to deliver the evidence-based treatment that children truly need. Instead, many engage in harmful practices that inflict severe harm, including physical, verbal, and sexual abuse, along with isolation, forced labor, sedation, and deprivation of food and sleep. Methods such as attack therapy and aversion therapy contribute to an environment that re-traumatizes vulnerable children rather than fostering healing. The Impact of Separation
Removing a child from their family does not solve existing problems; it often makes them worse. Such separation can hinder the development of healthier relationship skills in both the child and the family. It is vital that we advocate for children and families, ensuring they have access to effective and compassionate treatment options.
